With the most medals for an Alaska team in the past decade of competition, West Valley High School Academic Decathlon continued its winning ways at the U.S. Academic Decathlon in Garden Grove, Calif., shortly after being crowned state champions at the GCI Alaska Academic Decathlon.

West Valley student William Mitchell also made tournament history as the first Alaskan to qualify and compete as an individual in the competition. Mitchell won gold in mathematics honors and a bronze medal in music honors.

The West Valley team finished fourth in its division and took home 14 medals at the national competition.

This Fairbanks team was represented by students Jordan Centeno, Atticus Geiger, Robert Hartman, Raymond Hogenson, Colton Neumeister, Garrett Monroe, Harrison Owen and Jack Phipps and coached by Coby Haas and assistant coach Thomas McClelland. Team members were received the following awards:

The U.S. Academic Decathlon is a 10-event scholastic competition for teams of high school students. The theme for the 2014 – 2015 Academic Decathlon was New Alternatives in Energy: Ingenuity and Innovation.
